For years Quadra-Fire has produced clean burning non-catalytic wood appliances that beat all EPA requirements. In keeping with that strong heritage of performance and easy operation, we are proud to introduce the 31M-ACC-C, Discovery-II-C, and 57-ST-ACC-C, the first of many wood appliances that meet the new NSPS 2020 emission standard. We accomplish this utilizing the Quadra-Fire Four Point Burn and ACC technology, ensuring our commitment to easy operation without the use of a catalytic or hybrid system.

Although the looks are no different than the 31M-ACC-MBK and Discovery-II, the listing has changed so don’t wait until the last minute; be sure to sell through your inventory and displays and bring in the new 31M-ACC-C & Discovery-II-C.  Consumer websites will be updated accordingly.

For the 57-ST, Quadra-Fire added a 350 CFM fan as a option, replacing the 160 CFM fan. The air slot size was increased to accomplish this so the appearance has slightly changed, along with changes to BTUs, efficiency, emissions and clearances. Products will be ready to order in December. Be sure to sell through your inventory and displays and bring in the new 57ST-ACC-C.

Product Enhancements to Mt. Vernon E2 Stove & Insert

In a continuing effort to deliver on our promise of performance and easy opration, Quadra-Fire has some exciting updates to the Mt. Vernon E2 stove and insert. They have certified this product to the new NSPS 2020 emissions standards, increased the efficiency from 81.6% to 83.2% and made some improvements to the burn pot and airflow ensuring that consumers will get longer burn times between fire pot cleanings than ever before! They even updated the maintenance chart in the new manual from “as needed or daily” to “as needed or weekly,” since our internal testing showed the E2 will run five times longer without the need to dump ashes from the burn pot.

No physical changes have been made so changing out your showroom display is not required until 2020. To keep it as simple as possible we have added a C to the end of each part number to reflect the change; see below.

• Freestanding Stove: MTV-E2-MBK-C, MTV-E2-CSB-C, MTV-E2-PMH-C, MTV-E2-PDB-C, MTV-E2-PFT-C, MTV-E2-PBK-C

All marketing materials are being updated with the new performance numbers, and the consumer website will be updated on December 1.

Hudson Bay News & Notes

Due to feedback from several customers we will change the venting notes section for the Hudson Bay freestanding gas stove, calling out that it ships with a DuraVent starting collar and to use DuraVent pipe for it. Even though it is tested and approved for SLP, due to the starting collar, DuraVent is much easier to install. Please reach out to us if you would like a copy of the revised pages. Otherwise, you will see this change effective Q2.

SlimLine X Series Upgrading to IntelliFire Touch Controls System

The SlimLine X Series is being upgraded with new IntelliFire Touch controls. Instead of an RC300 remote control, each SlimLine X fireplace will now include a touchscreen RC400, which is more intuitive and offers more control. The beautiful fire, framing and all other fronts, accessories and options will remain the same.

The fireplace SKU numbers will change with the addition of IFT at the end. For example, SL-7X will become SL-7X-IFT.

Showroom displays can easily be upgraded with an SLMR-IFT-UPK kit. This kit is also approved for use upgrading aftermarket, previously installed SL7X fireplaces.

The new version of the Slimline X Series will be available by November or while current quantities last.

2. Complete your pre-renovation energy assessment.
3. Review your assessment and renovation options with your energy advisor.
4. Complete at least two of the eligible renovations with a reputable contractor. (1 of which is for your wood-burning appliance).
5. Call your advisor to complete your post-renovation assessment.

Your advisor will collect and submit all the necessary paperwork to Union Gas or Enbridge. You will get your rebate cheque within 90 – 120 business days of submission. Maximum $5,000 rebate includes up to $500 for both energy assessments. You pay the HST on the cost of the assessments.

• Own a detached, semi-detached, row townhouse, or mobile home.

  • Kitchener Utility customer or reside in Kitchener
  • Utilities Kingston customer or reside in Kingston

An indoor wood-burning appliance certified to either CAN/CSA-B415.1 or the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 40 CFR Part 60 wood-burning appliance standard. Appliances exempt from EPA testing are not eligible unless they are B415.1-M92 certified.What Wood-Burning System applies for credit and how much could you get?

• An indoor pellet-burning appliance (includes stoves, furnaces and boilers that burn wood, corn, grain or cherry pits).
• An indoor masonry heater.

For Union  Gas Customers: You would receive $750 for an eligible wood-burning appliance. (Depending on your second measure, it could be more up to a max of $5000,00)

For Enbridge Customers: You would receive $1450 maximum for both measures no matter your choices.

Improvement to the Adventure II and Adventure III

Based on your feedback, Quadra-Fire has improved the side panels on the Adventure II and III, making them easier to remove when servicing thermocouples and tubes. This change will also help to reduce metal expansion noises.

This change is effective on all appliances starting with the following serial numbers: Adventure III # 00900200544; Adventure II # 00900100626. The new side panels will work on old appliances and the part number has stayed the same.

New Heat-Zone-Top Adapter for MEZZO & Crave

XXV-TC Shipping Bolts

The front shipping nuts and bolts on the XXV-TC must be reinstalled after the stove is removed from the skid to prevent smoke leakage into the home. See updated instruction manual details below:

The XXV-TC is attached to skid supports with (4) – 1/4-20 X 5/8” Hex C/S Screws to prevent movement during shipping. To free the stove from the skid support you must remove the (4) 1/4-20 x 5/8” screws located within the brackets. Figure 5.1. (2) 1/4-20 x 5/8” are located just inside the door under the ash pan. (2) 1/4-20 x 5/8” are locate at the back of the unit behind the rear cover panels. See section B. The front bolts/nuts must be reinstalled after the unit is removed from the skid supports to prevent smoke leakage into the home.

New Ceramic 5-Amp Control Board Fuse for Pellet Products

We have updated to a more durable ceramic 5-amp control board fuse to provide better protection for the control board. This new 5amp ceramic replacement is recommended for all pellet stoves with the exception of obsolete products with pressure ignition (PC45, PF100, PF 120, PB105, Hydroflex60).

Note that you cannot visually see if the white ceramic fuse is blown, therefore it will be necessary to test it with a meter. See the chart below for replacement part numbers that correspond to each unit. This update started in production in February:

The flowers are starting to bloom and the temperatures are definitely rising, which can mean only one thing. Spring is well underway and it is time to start thinking about preparing your stove or fireplace for the summer months—the official fireplace offseason. If you do the legwork to properly prepare your heating unit in the spring, getting everything back up and running in the fall when it starts to get cooler will be a much easier feat.

GasFueled Fireplaces

Gasfueled fireplaces and the inserts that surround them are probably one of the easiest types to clean, but do still require a little attention in the spring before you close up shop for the summer. Make sure you turn off the fuel source to the fireplace by shutting down the pilot and allow the fireplace to cool completely before you get started.

1. Remove any guards from the glass front of the fireplace and clean the glass thoroughly to remove any residue with a soft cloth and a manufacturer recommended cleaning solution.

2. Sweep out the inside of the fireplace with a dry cloth or vacuum to remove any dust and debris.

3. Carefully examine the inside of the fireplace insert and check for damages, such as cracks, chips, or rust. These damages should be promptly repaired before using your fireplace again for heating.

Wood Stoves

Because wood stoves are the housing for burning wood, the accumulation of ash and creosol can be a huge deal to contend with when you are maintaining your stove. Before you get started, make sure you have a drop cloth or plastic tarp surrounding your stove on the floor and there are no hot embers still burning inside.

1. Carefully remove any remaining ash inside of your stove with a small ash shovel and metal bucket.

2. Use a brisk stovesweeping brush or broom to sweep down the entire inside of the stove.

3. Use a dry cloth to scrub away any accumulated soot inside the stove and around the stove’s door.

4. Inspect the stove pipe for signs of damage, rust, or chipping.

5. Thoroughly examine the inside of the stove for cracks or signs of damage to the hearth bricks inside or the seal around the door itself.

6. Go ahead and make plans to have your chimney swept over the summer before the onset of the next heating season.

Pellet Stoves and Pellet Stove Inserts

Even though there are some pellet stoves and inserts that require very little maintenance, most will require that you tackle common cleaning tasks at least once a year. During the spring, it is a good time to go ahead and get your stove all cleaned up and ready for the following heating season. Be sure your stove is disconnected from power and completely cool before you begin.

1. Remove any ash and residue from the stove, ash pan, and burn pot with a metal shovel.

2. Scrape away any residue inside of the stove or clinging to the pellet stove insert with a brisk scrub brush.

3. Use a nonabrasive scrubbing pad to clean the glass of your pellet stove.

Regardless of the type of stove or fireplace you have, getting it clean and ready to go before you shut everything down in the spring will mean you will be all ready for heating in the fall. Be sure you follow any additional manufacturer guidelines to properly maintain your stove or fireplace.

On the list of ‘MustHave’ Home Features of 2015, fireplace sits alone at the top. In fact, the word ‘fireplace’ was mentioned in 23.8% of all the listings on realtor.com. While fireplaces might seem like an insignificant amenity to some, they have an unrivalled purpose in many living rooms & dens.

The High Demand for Fireplaces

The benefits of having a fireplace in your home can range from simply heating your entire house to creating a peaceful ambiance. It’s safe to say that staying warm on frigid winter days and even on unusually cool spring nights is not the only reason to desire a fireplace…

Heating is the first thing that comes to mind. While you could heat your house using central air, baseboards or electric heating, a fireplace offers more. Seeing the flames flicker and hearing the wood crackle while you enjoy a relaxing evening in front of your home fireplace can offer you instant stressrelief like nothing else can. A fireplace creates the perfect setting to drown out the blistering winter winds and to indulge in a romantic evening. So what does all of this mean? There are many pellet and wood stoves or inserts available that meet the required efficiencies allowing you to keep burning wood or pellets while abiding by the new bylaw. Gas is exempt from this bylaw which means you can choose any of our models.

Inspect that stove

Give your stove a close look now and check it periodically during the winter. Here’s what you’re looking for:

• Check the stove pipe, especially where it connects to the chimney. Stove pipes are subjected to high temperatures and if corrosion develops, the pipe should be replaced.

• Inspect the inside of your stove for cracks in the brick or damaged baffles. If anything needs attention, consult your stove dealer.

• Inspect the door gaskets. The seal should be so tight that a piece of paper or a dollar bill inserted between the door and the stove can’t be pulled out when the door is closed. Test all door sides and if the paper can be removed at any location, replace the gaskets. A tight door seal will help to create good draft and prevent smoke leakage.

Clean that chimney

Annual chimney cleaning is extremely important! There are thousands of chimney fires each year. They can cause extreme property damage and even death.

Don’t be a statistic. Chimneys for wood stoves (and fireplaces) should be inspected at least once a year by a professional stove dealer or a chimney sweep. They’ll look for cracks, leaks, warping, baffle gaps, creosote buildup or other obstructions that could potentially lead to chimney fires or carbon monoxide intrusions.

Choose the Right Stove

If you’re in the market for a new stove, get the most efficient design and best technologies you can. The stove will pay for itself over time. Examples are Harman’s FireDome technology, which is a non-catalytic system that produces both primary and secondary combustion to provide maximum heat and efficiency, and Quadra-Fire’s Four-Point Quad-Burn System. It burns the wood, gases, smoke and impurities to produce maximum heat while requiring less trips to the wood pile.

Hearth Products to the Rescue

Depending on what kind of hearth product you have and what fuel it uses, you may be able to generate heat so you can stay comfortably in your home.

Wood. If you have an efficient (preferably EPA-certified) wood-burning fireplace or stove and plenty of wood stacked, you’re in good shape. Just keep the fire going until the power is restored. To ensure you’re prepared and safe, don’t forget to have your chimney cleaned at least once a year.Gas. If you have a gas fireplace with a standing pilot, you can light it manually to activate the pilot and flames. If it was manufactured in recent years, it may have an energy-saving intermittent pilot ignition system, which requires electricity to spark the pilot flame. Many gas fireplaces, stoves and inserts made by Heat & Glo, Heatilator and Quadra-Fire have IntelliFire intermittent pilot ignition systems with battery backups that can be used to light the pilot and flames during power outages. Consult your model’s owner’s manual (available online) or local hearth dealer for more information and instructions.Pellet: If you have a Stove or insert that burn pellets, they require electricity to light the flame, but many models are available with battery backup systems. Examples are Quadra-Fire Mount-Vernon. Consult your owner’s manual to determine what size and how many batteries are needed. Also, keep in mind that power outage power surges can damage circuit boards and motors. For this reason, it’s a good idea to unplug your pellet stove during a storm when it’s not in use, or keep it plugged into a surge protector.

We have a home appliance store, mattress store, custom kitchen cabinet design department and a hearth store, all under one roof, which allows us to interact with builders and individuals.

What do you like to do when you’re not at Lawsons?

When deciding which fuel is right for you, consider two things: fuel availability in your area, and the amount of hands-on time you want to spend with your fireplace.

• Availability: Where do you live? If your home isn’t connected to natural gas or a propane source, a gas fireplace isn’t in the cards for you. If wood is abundant in your area, a wood-burning hearth is a great option. Just make sure it’s EPA certified so you have efficient fires that don’t fill the environment with harmful smoke and byproducts. Wood pellets, which are available in many areas, are renewable, will heat your home for many hours and burn very cleanly. We’ve put together some simple, but very important guidelines for storing pellets. There’s also a safety element to consider, so read on…

•  The best place to store pellets is indoors, such as in a garage or basement. The area should be free from moisture and humidity, and should not be susceptible to flooding. It’s best to store the bags off the floor on pallets or cardboard slips.

•  If you don’t have an indoor storage area, the next best thing is a shelter or shed that stays dry. In this environment, it’s especially important to stack the bags on pallets off the ground. While stacking, inspect the bags for any holes and repair them with duct tape or another waterproof tape. To further protect the fuel from water, cover the stack of bags with a tarp and securely fasten it.

•  Because we burn pellets inside our homes, it’s important to keep them as clean as possible. Be sure to protect your pellets from dust and other contaminants.

•  Avoid storing pellets in areas with direct sunlight, even if inside your home. Direct sunlight will warm the pellets.

•  Keep in mind that stored bags of pellets can release carbon monoxide gas (CO), especially when stored in warm environments. Make sure your storage area is well ventilated, install a CO detector, and be aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning.
